C2N2 - CYANOGEN

Properties of cyanogen:

It is colorless gas with a pungent odor, heavier than air. Poorly soluble in cold water. On chemical properties is similar to I2. Combusted in oxygen, decomposes in hot water and acids, reacts with alkalis.

Molar mass g/mol 52.04
Density g/litre 1.594
Boiling point °C -21.15

Methods for preparation of cyanogen:

4HCN + O2 = 2C2N2 + 2H2O (150° C, catalyst Ag).

2K[Ag(CN)2] = 2KCN + 2Ag + C2N2 (250-420° C).

Chemical reactions with cyanogen:

C2N2 = 2(CN) - radical (above 1000° C).

C2N2 + 4H2O(hot) = (NH4)2C2O4.

C2N2 + H2SO4(conc., hot) + 3H2O = CO↑ + CO2↑ + 2NH4HSO4.

C2N2 + 2NaOH = NaCN + NaOCN + H2O (normal temp.).

C2N2 + 2O2 = 2CO2 + N2 (burning on air).

C2N2 + 2H(0)(Zn, diluted H2SO4) = 2HCN.
