H2CN2 - CYANAMIDE

Properties of cyanamide:

White, when heating it is isomerizes. It has structure H2N - C ≡ N. It is readily soluble in water. Stable in weak acid solutions. Decomposes by concentrated acids, alkalis, ammonium hydroxide. Reacts with hydrogen and oxygen.

Methods for preparation of cyanamide:

CaCN2 + H2SO4(diluted) = CaSO4↓ + H2CN2.

2NH3 + (CN)Cl = NH4Cl↓ + H2CN2 (in ether).


Chemical reactions with cyanamide:

3H2CN2 = [NC(NH2)]3(melamine) (150° C).

H2CN2 + H2O = HCN(-)2 + H3O(+) (practically doesn't go).

H2CN2 + H2O = C(NH2)2O(carbamide) (in conc. H2SO4, NaOH).

2H2CN2(diluted) + Ca(OH)2 = Ca(HCN2)2 + 2H2O.

H2CN2 + 2H2 = C(graphite) + 2NH3 (400° C).

2H2CN2 + 3O2 = 2CO2 + 2N2 + 2H2O (300° C).

H2CN2 = C(NH)2 (in ether).
